VL-MICA NG Strengthens Air Defense Against Cruise Missiles and Drones at IDEX 2025

[Dated: 18 Feb 2025 ]     Country : United Arab Emirates

At IDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi, MBDA is showcasing the VL-MICA NG, a next-generation surface-to-air defense system designed to counter evolving aerial threats such as cruise missiles, drones, and precision-guided munitions. The system enhances protection for military, industrial, and civilian sites, operating autonomously or within a broader defense network.

The VL-MICA NG complements the ASTER SAMP/T NG system within a multi-layered defense strategy. It leverages the upgraded MICA NG missile, featuring a bi-pulse motor that doubles its range, advanced RF AESA and dual-band IR seekers, and mid-course guidance via a tactical data link. Designed for interoperability with NATO systems, it can be integrated with MISTRAL launchers for SHORAD and VSHORAD capabilities.

Weighing 112 kg and measuring 3.1 meters in length, the missile employs a multi-mode fuze, fragmentation warhead, and thrust vector control for high maneuverability. The system includes a tactical operations center, 3D surveillance radar, and a self-reloading vertical launcher. Capable of engaging multiple threats simultaneously, it ensures high first-shot kill probability with minimal personnel and maintenance requirements.

Already deployed by multiple armed forces, including for air security during the Paris 2024 Olympics, the VL-MICA NG offers enhanced performance with minor infrastructure adaptations. MBDA continues expanding its global presence, addressing the growing demand for scalable and interoperable air defense solutions.
