Norway Enhances Air Defense with NASAMS Upgrade to Counter Evolving Missile and Drone Threats

[Dated: 05 Nov 2025 ]     Country : Norway

On October 31, 2025, Norway announced a NOK 1 billion order for new NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) components from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to bolster its air defense network. This upgrade is part of a broader effort across Scandinavia to enhance resilience against growing missile and drone threats, which have become critical challenges for European security since 2022. The decision reflects a strategic shift towards more mobile, networked, and distributed defense operations, focusing on faster decision-making and survivability at the battery level.

NASAMS, a modular, medium-range air defense system co-developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon, is capable of engaging a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. Its networked architecture, which combines multiple sensors, launchers, and effectors, allows it to respond flexibly to various threats. The latest Norwegian package includes modernized command posts, communication nodes, and high-capacity radios such as Kongsberg’s THOR Combat Net Radio, enhancing mobility, bandwidth, and resilience, while ensuring compatibility with previous NASAMS iterations for easier sustainment and training.

The operational benefits of NASAMS have been highlighted in Ukraine, where the system has achieved a high success rate in intercepting low-altitude cruise missiles and UAVs. As of early 2025, it has reportedly achieved 900 successful interceptions with a 94% effectiveness rate, proving its reliability in complex threat environments. This operational success underscores the importance of mobile and distributed air defense networks, as opposed to static, point-defense solutions, especially in response to saturation strikes and low-flying threats.

Geostrategically, the Norwegian investment strengthens NATO’s northern defense posture, particularly along the Norwegian Sea and Arctic corridors, making it more difficult for adversaries, particularly Russia, to target critical infrastructure and air bases in the region. The upgrade also enhances Norway’s ability to integrate with allied forces, providing interoperability for NATO and reinforcing Norway`s role as a key player in the alliance`s northern defense shield.

This NASAMS upgrade is part of Norway’s ongoing commitment to enhancing national and NATO defense capabilities, with future contracts planned to further develop air defense infrastructure in line with Norway`s Long-Term Defense Plan. The move signals a broader trend in Nordic rearmament and demonstrates the continued importance of mobile, resilient, and networked air defense systems in responding to evolving threats from both state and non-state actors in the region.

By prioritizing survivable command-and-control systems alongside missile interceptors, Norway’s approach reinforces both national defense and NATO’s collective security in the High North, with a focus on rapid, decentralized decision-making and fast engagement cycles to counter modern missile and drone warfare.
